Phlebotomy Training

The following general list consists of the top 25 terms phlebotomy students should know:
1. Antecubital – the part of the arm opposing the elbow
2. Antiseptic – something that discourages microorganisms from growing
3. Betadine – popular topical antiseptic agent containing iodine
4. Blood – the plasma consisting of red and white blood cells and platelets that runs through the veins
5. Blood Bags – used for storing blood for transfusions and other purposes
6. Blood Vessels – a series of vessels through which blood is carried
7. Bloodborne pathogens – germs in the blood stream that can be passed on to others.
8. Cardiovascular system – the blood transportation system that also transports gasses, nutrients and waste products in the body
9. Center for Phlebotomy Education – an organization that oversees regional accreditation agencies and provides information on certification to students
10. Circulatory system – the bodily system of arteries, capillaries and veins that moves blood between the heart and other organs, which William Harvey discovered in 1628
11. Citrate Phosphate Dextrose (CDP) – an anticoagulant
12. Clots – semi-solid masses of blood inside or outside the body
13. Coagulate – the process of blood clots forming
14. Heart – the body’s main pumping system that takes oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps deoxygenated blood back to the lungs
15. Order of Draw – the order in which the blood is drawn, which may affect test outcomes
16. Pathogenic – capable of producing disease
17. Phlebotomy – obtaining blood from a vein by puncturing with a needle, either for diagnostic testing or treatment purposes
18. Pipette – glass or plastic cylindrical tube used for accurate measurements of small amounts of liquid
19. Pre-analytical errors – testing errors that result from delays in testing, poor temperature control and separation of blood products
20. Pulmonary circulation – a loop through the lungs that the circulatory system takes to oxygenate blood
21. Systemic circulation – a loop for delivering blood and nutrition and moving waste away from the circulatory system
22. Triglycerides – the most important of the three groups of neutral fats
23. Vacutainer – a system consisting of a hypodermic needle and vacuum tube that safely collects blood and stores it in a container with a cap
24. Venipuncture – the process of puncturing the vein with a hypodermic needle for the purpose of blood collection
25. Venous – of or pertaining to the vain
